Primary Research

Secondary Research

Organisations

When conducting primary research, there are 2 types of basic information that can be gathered by this, exploratory or specific. Exploratory research is open-ended, helps you define a specific problem, and normally involves detailed, unstructured interviews in which long answers are acquired from a small group of people.

On the other hand, however, specific research is precise in scope and is used to solve a problem that the exploratory may or may not have come up with in the answers to the research. Out of the 2 basic forms, specific research is more expensive than the others.

Secondary form of research is different as it is information that has already been gathered or put out to the public so they can utilise the information as an efficient method of market research. For example, a film production company wishes to improve their production method. They could then look at film reviews that have been posted and are available on most review websites such as; imdb.com, metacritic.com and rottentomatoes.com They then use this information and apply it to their future projects. This is very cost and time efficient as this doesn't require you having to conduct surveys as the information is already available.

Using organisations to conduct research is also a popular method that is quite expensive and utilised by big corporations and production houses or companies. This is as you pay these companies to conduct primary research for you and this is efficient as they do a professional job and provide companies with all the information they require by conducting in depth and statistical researches themselves.
